Paul Emmert (1826-1867)

Paul Emmert emigrated from Switzerland at nineteen; after his New York arrival, he headed west with the discovery of gold. He managed the Bear Hotel in Sacramento and later a theater in San Francisco. In 1853, he became one of the many artist-travelers to visit Hawai’i where he opened a print shop. He eventually moved to Kailua-Kona. His scenes depict with historical accuracy the times prior to the urbanization of Honolulu and on the neighbor islands. One resource has indicated that just a few original, Emmert paintings are known to still exist for public viewing; one is at the Bishop Museum, one is at the Kapiolani Children’s Hospital, and another is known to be in a private collection.
